We gratefully thank our Tournament Judge  Ahijah, for selecting the following winners of "Best Game" and "Best Save" and for the exceptional commentary.

Best Game played was by RD1974 vs Picante. This was an entertaining game. The opening was a Closed Sicilian popularized by Spassky in the 1960's. The opening in those days was primarily a K-side attack by white countered by a Q-side initiative by black. This game followed this pattern almost exactly except black started with an opening of the position in the center. After 5.d3 there are 2 main approaches by black to develop his pieces. The old way dating back to some Fischer suggestions are 5...e6 and 6...Nge7 followed by a quick advance 7...d5 in the center. This is not so popular anymore because of a lot of games by Kasparov playing a rather more orthodox pattern of 5...d6 and 6...Nf6 which was played by Picante. White played a customary offer of an exchange of knights by 9.Nce2. This is seldom accepted. 10.c3 forces a decision to either retreat or concede to the exchange. 10...Ne6 looks good but it has drawbacks. Advancing f4-f5 gains a tempo and is awkward for black. This eventually happened and the K-side attack is in full gear. After 13.0-0 I think white is already better. 13...0-0 looks brave but maybe just a little-bit foolhardy. On the 16th move white threatened to steamroll black with a pawnstorm. Various moves had to be countered quickly otherwise a general squashing was in the works with 16.g4, 17.Ng3, and 18.g5 etc. Black tried 16...e4. This was good and it almost worked! White did have to find some moves.
17.de would have been a blunder and permit black the freedom he needed. 20.Bf4 looks tempting but I think black gets some good counterplay for a poisoned sham sacrifice on d6 with 20...c4!  White would be in trouble after 21.Qd2 Ne4 and black has turned the tables on white. 20.Ng3 was the correct course of action. Black continued with his play in the center with 20...d5 21.Bf4 and 21...Qb6. The threats were still being made and white cautiously but prudently played 22.Kh2. 22.Kh1 was a reasonable alternative. The subtle 22...h6 may have been more along the lines of combining attack with defence, but it is hard to argue with a free pawn on b2. Is this the real poisoned pawn? It appeared to be greedy.White came to life with a resumption of agression. His next 4 moves brought all his pieces to very threatening squares and black had to scramble again. The whole Q-side of the board was history and the threats on the K-side were resurrected. After whites 4 moves 23-26 black had his own 4 moves ( 26-29 ) to mobilize for the defense. RD1974 must have seen some old Poisoned Pawn Sicilians when he played the 30.Rb3 lift aiming at going to g3. The weaknesses around the black King were now very hard to defend. 31.Nh6+ forced the opening of the g-file and even sacrificing a piece on g5 wasn't enough to stop the peril on the dark squares or f7. 34...Qe6 may have postponed the end of the game it wouldn't have changed the result. The Knight was lost and the King was still in trouble. 34...c4 surrendered all defense to the dark squares and cut off the Queen from defense of f7. Except for 37.Qb4+ winning the game 1 move more quickly than 37.Rg7 the rest required no comments.

The Best Save winner was RamRock for his draw vs Toukon played in Round 2. The game started with a very normal Caro-Kann but white deviated from usual lines like 6.Bd3 with the harmless Knight withdrawal 6.Ng3. This seemed to have a good effect on whites game because black became overconfident and it appeared that he miscalculated the customary c5 pawn advance. This resulted is the loss of a pawn. After 16.Qb7 black was down a pawn and facing a possible 3-1 Q-side pawn majority for white. Activity and greater freedom for his pieces helped black stifle the 3-1 problem. The next 3 moves by black broke up the 3-1 majority and put white in the position many of Karpov's opponents used to face, namely, too many good plans to choose from to convert an advantage. 19.Rab1 was quite normal but probably wrong. 19.a4 was much more direct and followed the principle that passed pawns must be pushed. I liked blacks response 19...Qb8. This move forced the exchange of one of the most important pieces ( the Queen ) that could assist in the promotion of the a-pawn. Black wasn't out of the dark after the exchanges and 22.Ra1. This was where a few more good moves could help him reach the light at the end of the tunnel. 22...f5 was a good waiting move. It limited the mobility of the white Bishop and prevented it from going to the h1-a8 diagonal. 23.a4 could have been played because the back rank threat was a mirage. 23.a4! cannot be answered with 23...Ba4?? because  24.Ra4 Rb1+ 25.Bf1 saves the mate and keeps the extra piece. 23.f3 was slow and it was the last chance white got to play a4. Black found another good move 23...Ba4 and black was seeing the light a little more brightly. White chose to offer a c-pawn exchange for an e-pawn. This was to black's liking and he was now getting closer to fulfilling another endgame principle when trying to draw positions when down material, namely, trading pawns and not pieces. A horrible consideration by black would have been 24...Kf7? 25.Bb3 Bb3 26.cb . I think the only person with the nerves to play such a Rook and Pawn ending would have been Korchnoi. He would have had to calculate that his 4-3 pawn majority on the K-side would have been superior to the 2-0 nearly immobilized Q-side for white. For white to activate one of the 2 Q-side pawns he would have to surrender the other. RamRock chose the clearer alternative and played 24...Rc2. White erred a few moves later with 26.Bb3?. Much better would have been 26.Rb1! planning on being behind the pawn on b3 with his rook if black exchanged Bishops. Black's light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be sunlight after 26.Bb3? Bb3 27.ab Rb2! and almost =. White seemed to be content with the draw after that and played for almost zero chances of winning by virtue of his trade of his big b3-pawn for the runt on h7. The draw was sealed after that. White achieved an advantage but failed to convert it to victory. Black found good ideas to limit white's chances and was rewarded with the split point. Congratulations to RamRock on a fine Save.

A second forfeit will result in immediate suspension in the current & next 2 Invitational tourney's.

Scheduling Procedures:

Each rounds pairings shall be posted to players' nominated *email addresses at around 22:00 each Wednesday. Players' are then required to be in contact with each other preferably within 24 hours of each post until a mutually agreeable 'game start' day & time is reached. Email is the preferred method in which to schedule a 'game start' time but remember to check your Spam as well. ICC messages or chat can be useful, (especially copying & pasting your email as an ICC message for added insurance against straying emails) but once an agreed time is reached it needs to be confirmed with *email &
also Cc: chesskix, RD1974 & John3v16 so that this page can be updated with the scheduled time.

If a player does not show up at the agreed time & after a 30 minute grace period has expired, then provided the offended player agrees, the game may be rescheduled. If you or the TD's have any concerns about the scheduling of the game, you will need to Forward your Sent offers to the TD's in case the game needs to be adjudicated.

Game Completion Deadline:

Rounds commence from 22:00 Wednesday & all games should be concluded by 21:00 the following Wednesday (the playing week) so that pairings for the next round can be announced. Games cannot be adjourned.

Posting Results:
Posting your PGN and/or game result is not necessary unless your game start time has not been advertised on this page, or if you anticipate that your game will disappear from your ICC History within 48 hours of concluding the game.

Adjudications:
If the game does not get played by the end of the playing week it will need to be adjudicated, the players themselves may assist in the adjudication process with commentary addressed to the TD's prior to the game completion deadline.
